Religious Education RE has a central part to play in learning at Nether Stowe and this is reflected in how much time is allocated for all students to study RE at all levels. The RE department believe it is vital for students in today’s world to have a deep appreciation of the questions, issues and perspectives raised by religion, ethics and philosophy. We aim is to give students the opportunity to examine and consider the many different ways people see our world, to understand the reasons behind the way people live their lives and to develop their own spiritual and moral life. This is reflected in the two main learning objectives of The Staffordshire Agreed Syllabus: Learning about Religion and Learning from Religion. Key Stage 3 Religious Education. Nether Stowe are committed to implementing The Staffordshire Agreed Syllabus for RE. This means we want students to learn about religion and also to learn from religion for their own lives. We therefore give students the chance to consider religious and moral ISSUES. The next step is to investigate RELIGION and the beliefs and practices related to the issues. Then we explore the MEANING of symbols and writings, finally allowing us to form our own LIFESTANCE on the issues. This learning process is illustrated below.
Key Stage 4 Religious Education. Nether Stowe is an exceptional school for GCSE RE as we provide the full course to all students and a short course for any that feel it is better for them to focus their effort elsewhere. Students have two 50 minute lessons per week. We follow the OCR Christian Perspectives in moral, social and world issues course and the OCR Islam course. We have been consistently successful in examinations with over 60% of our full course students gaining an A*-C grade. Along with gaining the GCSE qualification pupils benefit from the opportunity of considering contemporary issues that are relevant to themselves and the world they live in. The Islam course will also help them to grow in their appreciation of the world today, where they will encounter many people who have very different cultural and spiritual outlooks. We aim to equip students with the thinking and emotional skills to enable them to develop into mature adults who respect the rights of others. Study includes:- Christian perspectives on ü Marriage, living together and divorce. ü Abortion, contraception and fertility treatment. ü Suicide and euthanasia. ü Racism and sexism. ü War, peace and Human Rights. ü The Environment. ü Poverty. Islam ü Major beliefs. ü Fasts and Festivals. ü Rites of Passage. ü Pilgrimage to Mekkah. ü Sacred writings. ü Divisions in Islam. Key Stage 5 Religious Education. Nether Stowe believe all students should have the opportunity to consider religious and ethical ideas and therefore gives all sixth form students the chance to study RE in a short ten week course in both Year 12 and 13. Students in Year 12 look at Ultimate Questions such as, “IS THERE LIFE AFTER DEATH?” Or “IS THERE A GOD WHO CREATED THE UNIVERSE?” Year 13 students study the role of violence and fighting within religion and the world, considering questions like, “WHY DID 9/11 HAPPEN?” and “WHAT IS THE BATTLE BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL?” Students could gain a Staffordshire SACRE Certificate to mark their achievement levels. AS/A2 Level Religious Studies. Nether Stowe offers the opportunity to study Religion at A level, where we follow the OCR Philosophy of Religion and Ethics course. This offers students the chance to engage with philosophical arguments for and against religion and God, along with the chance to engage with ethical theories and practical ethics. This is a move away from traditional study of religion into the more philosophical side of religious studies. AS Level includes:- ü Greek Philosophy. (Plato and Aristotle.) ü Biblical Study. (God as creator, good and active in the world.) ü Arguments for God’s existence. (Teleology, Cosmology and Ontology) ü Arguments against God’s existence. (Problem of evil, psychology, sociology and science.) ü Meta-ethics and ethical language. ü Ethical theories. Moral relativism, Virtue ethics and Natural Law. ü Immanuel Kant ü Utilitarianism. ü Absolutism. ü Religious ethical decision making. ü Practical ethics. A2 Level includes:- ü Body and soul distinction. ü Life after death concepts. ü Revelation. ü Religious experiences. ü Miracles. ü Religious Language. ü Freewill and determinism. ü Nature and role of conscience. ü Religious ethics ü Practical ethics. As you can see RE at Nether Stowe is comprehensive and engaging. It offers personal challenge, relevance and the opportunity for all to grow in their social, moral and spiritual life. However, what really makes RE at Nether Stowe exceptional is the commitment of staff to each student and the care provided to enable them to flourish in their personal development.
