Information & Communications Technology

Nether Stowe High School went through a major ICT redevelopment in the summer of 2005. A lot of money was spent on replacing old, out-dated equipment and also bringing in new technology. We are now well equipped with the following ICT technologies:

  • 4 Windows 2003 servers
  • A managed wireless network throughout the school
  • A 8Mb broadband Internet connection so that staff and students can benefit from fast download speeds, which is managed to filter and block websites that are unsuitable for viewing
  • Close to 450 PCs and laptops:
    • Due to the Microsoft Agreement that the school has in place, all PCs and laptops benefit from having Windows XP Professional and Microsoft Office 2003 Professional installed on them
    • We have 3 dedicated ICT Suites
    • PCs in every classroom
    • Every teacher has a laptop, which has wireless connectivity to the school network
    • Every 6th Form student is offered the opportunity to be loaned a school laptop, to help aide with their studies. This is also wirelessly linked to the school network
  • 1 mobile laptop trolley, containing 16 laptops
  • The PCs and laptops are managed, controlled and securely locked down using a solution called SchoolSuite
  • All PCs and laptops are protected against the latest viruses, using up to date software and by automatically downloading and installing the latest anti-virus protection files
  • Colour and mono laser printers placed around the school for staff and students to print to
  • Teachers using electronic registration to register lessons, view student details, view or add student events and also to carry out assessment and reports for every student in school. This is constantly displaying live data, through an Internet website, and so can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Parents will soon be given access so that they too can view details for their child and see what they are up to in school
  • Microsoft Exchange email accounts for all staff and all 6th form students, which they can also access from anywhere in the world
  • Remote support software to allow staff to view a students screen, from their own PC or laptop in their class, and then take control of it if the student requires help or if the teacher wants to share work with the rest of the class
  • A large school hall with 3 plasma screens set up. These screens are connected to an amplifier and speakers and can display videos, DVD’s and a users laptop. It is also connected up to a Freeview box, which proves very popular with students at lunchtimes as they can watch and listen to music channels
  • A lecture theatre with a 3m electric screen, amplifier and speakers where staff and students can project a video, a DVD or laptop work onto
  • Interactive Whiteboards and ceiling mounted projectors spread around the school
  • A number of portable projectors for staff and student use
  • A number of digital cameras and digital camcorders for staff and student use

The ICT Department also has an ICT Code on Conduct, which they expect all students to read, understand and respect.
